Teaching students to read nonfiction requires teachers to plan for both the level of difficulty to read the text but also consider fluency, strategic thinking skills and reading stamina required. Participants will learn close reading strategies for nonfiction from a variety of sources including the Beers and Probst signposts and the SIMR Paraphrasing strategy. We will apply the strategies to different nonfiction texts and will explore writing in response to the text using the writing to read research of Dr. Timothy Shanahan.
